The Sarntal Folk Festival has been a feature of the valley for centuries.
The annual Sarntal Town festival, which takes place on the first weekend in September, is a fixed date for all the locals. Many people regard it as representing the end of summer, others see it as one of the most beautiful Kirchweih (church consecration) festivals in the world, captivating locals and guests every year. Various music bands from all over the country contribute to the event, which includes traditional costume parades and a torchlight procession through the village centre of Sarnthein as well as folk-dance groups and Schuhplattler dancing. The festival starts on Saturday evening. On the Holy Guardian Angel Sunday, the festival begins with a mass and procession to St. Cyprian's Chapel. The absolute highlight of the festival is the large parade in the afternoon with colourful floats and boys and girls in traditional costumes. This lively festival continues til Monday after the traditional farmers' market with local and regional quality products. Food, drink and entertainment are well provided for.
