This easy walk features views of mountains, forest and the various scattered settlements in the valley, and involves walking up the left side of the valley orographically, on forest roads and farm tracks through the countryside. Starting point for the walk is Gasteig at the start of the valley. Walkers take the old ‘Jaufentalweg‘ path past rustic farmhouses, up to the small village of Mittertal.
The right place for active holidaymakers
The valley is a good holiday destination both in summer and in winter – whether staying on the farm in a holiday flat or in a room in Jaufental valley. Holidaymakers should leave themselves enough time, because they will be spoilt for choice at any time of year: ski tours for beginners and the more advanced, gentle walks or challenging tours – there’s something for everyone. A trip to Jaufenspitze mountain peak via Jaufenhaus refuge should be on the agenda. Historical Jaufenhaus refuge used to be a major point on the major inner-Alpine route between Wipptal and Passeiertal valleys, and helped to influence the development of trade and wealth in the Tyrol region. The building was first mentioned in records in the 12th century as a hostel that weary travellers would stop off at. It still invites in people crossing the Jaufen pass today for a spot to eat and drink. This short, rather challenging hike up to the 2,480-metre-high Jaufenspitz mountain peak involving a degree of surefootedness and a head for heights starts here. However, the quite laborious ascent to the top is rewarded with breathtaking views.

In winter, ski tourers in Jaufental valley come across the perfect conditions. Keen sledgers will also enjoy it, too, as ’Tonnerboden‘ natural sledge run, made up of a well-prepared racetrack and a free-time track, may be found in Jaufental valley. After a short ascent, there is an adventurous sledge run as a reward. Descending the track at night is great fun, too, as the track is lit up unti 9.30 pm. Nearby Ratschings-Jaufen skiing and hiking area provides varied skiing in winter as well as lush green meadows in summer – a paradise for nature lovers.

South Tyrol is well known for its culinary delicacies and traditions. For centuries, self-sufficiency was practised and raw materials from farms were processed on the farm to provide for farm families. The water-powered grain mill at Maurerhof farm in Jaufental valley is a good example of how farms managed to be self-sufficient. Grain planted in the fields was ground into flour and then made into bread on the farm. The mill may be visited to get a better idea of what went on. At nearby Ungererhof farm in Schluppes, the curing room and the bread and cheese store may be viewed – and the traditional farm dishes tasted afterwards.
