Don't miss the Trudner Fault, where the geological transition from dolomite to porphyry and the striking change in vegetation can be clearly observed.
When you take this extra segment, you will begin from Gfrill, which is located at approx. 1,300 meters above sea-level, and continue to Buchholz at 560 meters above sea-level. At first, you'll have a pleasant, relaxing stroll downhill until you come to Unterstein. You can then continue along the old aerial lift trail until you reach the vestiges of an old cableway. The trail then goes downhill until you come to the brook where the Truden Faultline is especially noticeable. This boundary is distinctly visible not only on the basis of the different geological strata (dolomites and porphyry), but also due to the abrupt change in vegetation. You can then continue to the small village of Buchholz.
Wear sturdy hiking boots. Some sections may be slippery when wet.
Hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, drinking water and sun protection.
From Gfrill to Buchholz: descend via Unterstein and the old cableway trail to the Trudner Fault, where rocks and vegetation change dramatically.
Parking is available in the centre of Gfrill.
Gfrill can be reached by road from Salurn or Altrei. The trail starts in the village centre.
Take bus line 127 from Salurn to Gfrill. Return from Buchholz is also possible by bus line 127.
The hike starts in Gfrill and descends to Unterstein. It follows the former cableway trail to the remains of an old cableway before continuing downhill to the stream, where the Trudner Fault clearly marks the transition between dolomite and porphyry as well as a distinct change in vegetation. The route ends in Buchholz.
