Barbiano/Barbian
Trechiese Barbiano/Dreikirchen Barbian
In a small forest clearing with a magnificent panoramic view, three small churches were built between the 13th and 16th centuries on the site of an ancient pagan spring sanctuary. Although they are attached to one another, each church is independent. The origin of this part of Barbian remains a mystery to this day.
The churches are dedicated to St. Gertrude, St. Nicholas, and St. Mary Magdalene. The Church of St. Gertrude is first mentioned in documents in 1237 and is therefore probably the oldest of the three. Particularly impressive is the unique wooden shingle roof that links the three churches together.
Accessible only on foot via beautiful hiking trails. The key is available at the Messnerhof inn right next door. Guided tours only by prior appointment, tel. +39 0471 650 059. Open from May to mid-November; closed in winter.
Leave the motorway at Klausen/Chiusa. Follow the state street of Brenner/Brennero (SS12) in direction of Bozen/Bolzano or Waidbruck/Ponte Gardena.
