St. Anthony’s Chapel
The Church of St. Anthony (Dlieja de S. Antoni) in Ortisei is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua and was built in Renaissance style. It stands in the center of St. Anthony’s Square and is an important landmark of the lower village center of Ortisei. The present church was constructed between 1673 and 1676 and consecrated in 1680 by the Bishop of Brixen, Paulinus Mayr. The oldest document mentioning a church dedicated to St. Anthony dates back to 1430.
Over the centuries the church has been restored several times. The first restoration took place in 1874 and was financed by Franz Insam-Brida. A second restoration followed in 1959, when painting works were carried out by the restorer and church painter Viktor Pitscheider de Menza. Between 1985 and 1986 the church was thoroughly restored again through voluntary work by the Schützenkompanie of Ortisei and donations. During the tourist season the church was also used by the Protestant community for religious services.
Inside the church there is a Romanesque-style high altar with an altarpiece by the Swiss painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden (around 1850). On both sides of the altar stand statues of St. Rupert and St. Ulrich created by Johannes Vinatzer (1684). The side altars feature oil paintings by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg and angel heads from the Vinatzer school. The Baroque pulpit contains niches with sculptures of the four Evangelists. Twelve oil paintings from the 17th century depict scenes from the life of St. Anthony.
Near the entrance there is a Lourdes grotto with a sculpture of St. Bernadette before the Virgin Mary, created by Jakob Crepaz. Other sculptures in the church include St. Francis by Ludwig Moroder-Lenert (1914), St. Anthony with the Child by Paul Moroder with polychrome decoration by Max Stuflesser (1945), and a depiction of the Holy Trinity by Vinzenz Moroder-Resciesa (1910).
On the southern exterior wall, in a niche, stands a Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk, while above the main portal there is a statue of St. Anthony. Six painted stained-glass windows and a rose window above the entrance illuminate the interior. These windows were donated by the Insam-Brida family in 1874.
