From Unterplanken across the Schuher Alm, the Golfen to the Hochhorn

Starting point & parking: Gsiesertal Valley – Pichl, Unterplanken (1213 m)

Descent: back via the ascent route

Difficulty: medium | for average skiers; open terrain with moderate slope gradient, minimal technical difficulties

Altitude difference: 1400 m

Slope exposure: southwest

Best period: December – March

Mountain hike from Unterplanken via Schuher Alm Hut to Golfen and optionally Hochhorn, with Dolomites views.

Parking at the sports area in Pichl.

Coming from Innsbruck/Brennero (A): Drive on the Highway of Brennero (A22) until the exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria, then go on along the SS49-E66 for about 58kms until you arrive in Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies Valley, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo. Coming from Lienz (A): You can reach us also padding by Lienz in Westtyrol (A). You have to cross the Austrian-Italian border between Ahrnbach and Winnebach (B100-E66) and drive on the SS46-E66 until Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.

From Unterplanken, go eastwards past the chapel of St. Florian and uphill along forest path no. 91 on the orographic right side of the Finsterbach stream. After about 45 minutes the trail from Oberplanken joins; follow it briefly, then turn left towards the Schuher Alm (1958 m, Dolomite panorama). Continue southwards on the Toblacher Höhenweg no. 24, passing Rosszogel (2163 m) and Stacher Riedl (2173 m). Cross a wide ridge to the Golfen (2493 m) and for the more ambitious continue another 30 minutes to the Hochhorn summit (2623 m).
