Barbian/Barbiano
Winter hiking with snowshoes from Huber Kreuz to Unterhorn
Contacts
Operation Schedules
This snowshoe hike leads from the Huber Kreuz car park through the snow-covered Barbian Alps to the Unteres Horn. The route passes Merlboden, circles the Rittner Horn and continues to the Unterhornhaus and Feltuner Hut. Along the way, there are wide views of South Tyrol’s winter mountains and the Dolomites.
The return route leads via Pennleger back to the starting point. The hike requires good fitness, experience in winter terrain and suitable equipment. Check the snow, weather and avalanche conditions before setting out. Do not undertake the tour in poor visibility, strong winds or uncertain conditions.
The snowshoe hike begins at the Huber Kreuz car park at 1,621 metres. From there, follow trail no. 4 towards Merlboden. The route leads through the snow-covered woodland and alpine pastures of the Barbian Alps.
From Merlboden, continue around the Rittner Horn. Depending on the snow conditions, the visible track may differ from the summer trail. Proceed only in good visibility and use an up-to-date winter map or GPX track for orientation.
The route then reaches the Unteres Horn at approximately 2,044 metres. The Feltuner Hut and Unterhornhaus are located in this area. Check in advance whether the huts are open during winter.
For the return journey, descend from the Unteres Horn towards Pennleger. From Pennleger, follow trail no. 3B through the alpine landscape back to the Huber Kreuz car park.
Trail conditions and safety:
The route follows snow-covered forest roads, alpine tracks and mountain paths, with some unprepared sections. Snow depth, drifts and ice can significantly affect the difficulty and walking time. Snowshoes, sturdy winter boots, poles, warm clothing, gloves, sufficient water and food are required. Check the weather forecast and current avalanche bulletin before setting out. Depending on the conditions and terrain, carry an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel and make sure you know how to use them.
