The Hornrunde circular trail leads through the wide alpine pastures of the Barbian Alp and into the area around the Rittner Horn. Along the route, there are expansive views of the surrounding mountains and the Dolomites.

This moderately difficult circular hike partly follows narrow and rocky mountain paths and therefore requires sure-footedness and a good level of fitness. The recommended starting point is the Huber Kreuz car park on the Barbian Alp.

Sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water and provisions, as well as sun and rain protection, are recommended. Since long sections of the route run above the tree line, there is little shelter from the sun and thunderstorms. Depending on snow conditions, the hike is generally accessible from June to October and is not suitable for pushchairs.

Scenic circular hike across the Barbian Alp and around the Rittner Horn. This moderately difficult route requires good fitness and sure-footedness.

From the SS12 near Waidbruck, turn towards Barbian and follow the road for approximately four kilometres to the village centre. Continue through the village towards Saubach and, after about 500 metres, turn right following the signs for the Barbian Alp/Huber Kreuz. Follow the paved mountain road for around 20 minutes to reach the Huber Kreuz car park. The mountain road is narrow and winding in places.

Bus route 346: Klausen – Waidbruck – Barbian

The summer hiking bus departs from Barbian every Wednesday from 20 May to 28 October 2026.

Departure from Barbian, in front of the tourist information office:
9:45 a.m.

Return from Huber Kreuz:
4:45 p.m.

Registration is required by the previous day via the Events in the Eisack Valley website.

The hike begins at the Huber Kreuz car park. From there, follow trail no. 4 uphill to the Rittner Horn. Then descend along trail no. 1 to the Unterhorn. There are two options for the return to the car park:

Option A: From the Unterhorn, first follow trail no. 3A downhill via the Pennleger. Then turn left onto trail no. 3B, which leads back to the Huber Kreuz car park. The total walking time is approximately five hours.

Option B: From the Unterhorn, follow trail no. 15 past the mountain pine oil distillery. At the next junction, keep right and follow trail no. 4 downhill to the Huber Kreuz car park. The total walking time for this option is approximately four and a half hours.
