Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this hike. The flowering landscape in spring and colourful vineyards in autumn make the route especially attractive.

From the main square, we follow the initially steep Obergasse. After traveling about 100 meters - at the little square – we turn to the right. At the next junction - the fountain – we take the Maria-Hilf Gasse to the left, passing by farms and tall old poplars until it meets the road to Graun. After about 100 meters turn left on a narrow side road - marking 2 - leading to the hamlet Hofstatt (608 m). Change to the Graun road until shortly after Gasthof Halbweg where the road leads left to an asphalt road at the Himmelspfort inn – with the possibility of a detour to the village center of Penon (605 m). To return, turn right just after the restaurant at the Himmelspfort. Over a narrow path leading through vineyards, the trail climbs down and soon reaches the paved road that leads to Kurtatsch.

 

The route is technically easy but requires a moderate level of fitness due to the elevation gain. Forest and meadow paths may become slippery after rain.

Scenic circular hike from Kurtatsch to Penon and back through vineyards, forests and historic paths with panoramic valley views.

Public parking is available in the centre of Kurtatsch.

Take the A22 motorway and exit at Egna/Ora. Continue along the South Tyrolean Wine Road to Kurtatsch. The trail starts in the village centre.

Kurtatsch can be reached by regional buses from Egna, Ora and nearby villages. Check current timetables before starting the hike.

The hike starts in the village centre of Kurtatsch. Follow the marked paths towards Penon, climbing gradually through vineyards above the village. The route continues along old hillside paths, passing farms and woodland sections before reaching the quiet mountain village of Penon.

After a break in Penon, return to Kurtatsch via a different route through forests and vineyards. The descent offers beautiful views across the Adige Valley before reaching the starting point in the village centre.
