Kasern-Prettau/Casere-Predoi
Hiking tour on the sunny side of Kasern-Prettau/Casere-Predoi
Bruneck/Brunico - Kasern-Prettau/Casere-Predoi 42 km
From Kasern/Casere via the Starkl Alm to Prettau/Predoi…
There are various ridgeways on the sunny valley side of Prettau/Predoi and Kasern/Casere. The most well-known is the Lausitzer path, which leads out of the valley at an altitude of 2,500 m. Less exhausting, and situated about 500 m lower, there is the route leading from Kasern/Casere up to the Starkl Alm, continuing on the forest road and then descending to Prettau/Predoi. The views of the impressive glaciers of the Zillertal Alps and the High Tauern mountains make this route especially rewarding. As we climb up the mountain, the mighty Rauchkofel awaits us, and we let our eyes wander to the symbolical landmark of Dreiherrenspitze (3,499 m) with its peak covered in snow.
This round-trip tour can be done without using your car, you can use the public bus transport instead. From the final bus stop in Kasern/Casere we walk briefly towards the end of the valley and after the mountain inn Kasern we turn left, following path nr. 15 to the Starkl Alm (signpost for Heilig Geist Jöchl). We ascend in serpentines to the alpine pasture; the inclination of the hillside is moderate. Shortly before reaching the Starkl Alm (2,029 m), we leave the forest line behind us and like in a window, the view of the dominant Rauchkofel, situated directly above the Alm, astonishes us. Now we turn left and proceed on the forest road heading south, past the Kaserer Alm. Right above the path we can observe some massive avalanche barriers. At the first forking in the path we walk straight on, actually turning right heading towards Moar- and Waldner Alm. We continue ascending slightly until we branch off to the left onto route nr. 16 b (still before reaching Moar-Alm) which brings us back to the village centre of Prettau/Predoi.
