Combining the tour with the 2 Lakes Shuttle makes it more comfortable and saves elevation gain. Take time at the summit – the views are outstanding.

This demanding high-alpine circular tour combines some of the most impressive landscapes of the Rieserferner mountain group. Via the Jägerscharte, we reach the distinctive summit of Almerhorn (2,985 m), enjoy wide panoramic views, and continue the route via the Barmer Hut (2,610 m) and the Riepenscharte (2,732 m) down to Lake Antholz (1,640 m).

The route leads through varied terrain – from alpine meadows to scree slopes and rocky sections – offering impressive views of the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks and the glaciers of the Rieserferner group.

Refreshment stops are available at Staller Saddle, the Barmer Hut and at Lake Antholz.

Shuttle option
A particularly convenient option is to use the 2 Lakes Shuttle:
you can start at Lake Antholz and take the shuttle up to Staller Saddle, or begin at Staller Saddle and finish the tour with a descent to the lake. This option is ideal for planning the route as a traverse and saving elevation gain on the ascent.

Note
This tour is intended for experienced mountain hikers with sure-footedness, a head for heights and good physical condition.

Sturdy mountain boots, weatherproof clothing, and sufficient water and provisions are essential. Trekking poles and sun protection are recommended. Alpine experience and sure-footedness are required.

Challenging circular hike from Lake Antholz via Jägerscharte and Almerhorn peak to Barmer Hut and back via Riepenscharte.
Large paid parking area at the Biathlon Center.

From the Puster Valley Road turn into the Antholz Valley and follow the road to Lake Antholz.

The starting point of the hike is located at the large paid parking area at the Biathlon Center.

Take bus line 431 from the Olang-Antholz train station to reach Lake Antholz, the starting point of the hike.

We start at Lake Antholz at the Tiroler hut and first follow the path towards Staller Saddle. After a short ascent, we reach the pass (2,050 m) and continue towards Almerhorn peak (turning left uphill).

The ascent leads through varied alpine terrain up to the Jägerscharte. A short, partly cable-secured section brings us to the pass (2,870 m). From here, the summit of Almerhorn (2,985 m) can be reached in just a few minutes, rewarding us with spectacular panoramic views.

After reaching the summit, we return to the Jägerscharte and descend to the Barmer Hut (2,610 m), an ideal place for a break.

From there, we follow trail no. 112 up to the Riepenscharte (2,764 m) and then descend via trail no. 39 back to Lake Antholz.

Alternative
The tour can also be combined with the 2 Lakes Shuttle to adapt the ascent or descent or to plan it as a traverse.
