Hike with view of the Dolomites

The Gsiesertal Valley has many beautiful alpine pastures, some of which also offer refreshments. As its name suggests, the “Almweg 2000” path runs at an average altitude of 2000 metres from one alpine pasture to another and offers impressive views of the entire valley.

From St. Martin to St. Magdalena along the Almweg 2000

From St. Martin via Hörneckele, Pfinnalm and Aschtalm to St. Magdalena.

Parking: Gsiesertal Valley – St. Martin, Village Center

Coming from Innsbruck/Brennero (A): Drive on the Highway of Brennero (A22) until the exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria, then go on along the SS49-E66 for about 58kms until you arrive in Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies Valley, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.
Coming from Lienz (A): You can reach us also padding by Lienz in Westtyrol (A). You have to cross the Austrian-Italian border between Ahrnbach and Winnebach (B100-E66) and drive on the SS46-E66 until Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.

From the valley road at St. Martin (1276 m) follow trail no. 36 westwards up to the Karbacher Hof (1440 m, refreshments available; also accessible by car). From there continue through the Karbach Valley to the Schäfer Alm (1616 m) and further along the forest road branching right, trail no. 52. Continue southwestwards through steep wooded slopes into a small alpine valley (approx. 1800 m), past hay barns and across the Vigeiner meadows up to a small saddle (approx. 2100 m) and from there rightwards to the cross on the Hörneckele (2127 m).

From the Hörneckele you can follow part of the Almweg 2000 by taking the trail marked with a red dot northeastwards across the alpine slopes. At the junction you reach the actual Almweg 2000, which leads to the Pfinnalm (2152 m) and further to the Aschtalm (1950 m, refreshments available). From there, trail no. 10 descends through the forested slopes down to the hamlet of Huiben and further to St. Magdalena (1398 m). Return by line bus to St. Martin.
