Route

From the historic centre of Klausen, the Chestnut Trail crosses the Thinne Bridge and continues into the Thinne Valley. After a short tunnel, the route climbs steeply along a farm access road to the Muttner farm.

The trail then follows gravel tracks and farm roads through woodland, meadows and orchards, passing the Staudach farm, the Johannser farm, the Wetterkreuz viewpoint and the Tschotthof farm.

It continues across meadows and farm access roads through the Blabach gorge to Villanders. Passing the parish church, the route follows the picturesque village lane into the centre.

From Villanders, the trail descends below the village into the Mühlbach gorge and continues to the hamlet of St. Moritz. A quiet farm road and hiking trail lead into the Zargenbach gorge. The route then continues through woodland and over partly steep and rocky terrain to the road connecting Villanders and Barbian. The final two kilometres follow a quiet panoramic road to the centre of Barbian.

Trail conditions

The route follows paved roads, farm access roads, gravel and forest tracks, as well as woodland and meadow paths. Some sections are steep and rocky. Sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.

Suitable for pushchairs: No. Due to the steep climbs, gravel paths, woodland sections and rocky terrain, the trail is not suitable for pushchairs.

Barrier-free: No. Due to the elevation changes, gradients and unpaved sections, the route is not barrier-free.
