A pleasant and interesting hike on borders

Starting point: Gsiesertal Valley – St. Magdalena, Head of the Valley (1465 m)

Hike from St. Magdalena via Pidig and Oberberg huts to Gsieser Törl with return through the Ampfertal Valley.

Parking lot on payment at the head of the valley in the Gsiesertal Valley – St. Magdalena.

Coming from Innsbruck/Brennero (A): Drive on the Highway of Brennero (A22) until the exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria, then go on along the SS49-E66 for about 58kms until you arrive in Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies Valley, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.
Coming from Lienz (A): You can reach us also padding by Lienz in Westtyrol (A). You have to cross the Austrian-Italian border between Ahrnbach and Winnebach (B100-E66) and drive on the SS46-E66 until Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.

From the Head of the Valley in the Gsiesertal Valley – St. Magdalena (1465 m, parking fee), continue left resp. straight into the valley to the farm Rotmooshof, from there take the road through the forest (marking no. 49) or the path heading east through alpine areas to the huts Messnerhütte (1660 m, refreshments available) and Kradorfer Alm (1704 m, refreshments available). Continue up the valley on a steeper slope to the Oberbergalm hut (1975 m, refreshments available) and across lush alpine meadows through the source area of the Gsieser stream to the Gsieser Törl (2205 m). Descent: from the Gsieser Törl in a westerly direction you cross the mountain slopes for a long stretch on a mostly flat route to the Weißbachalm (2112 m, no refreshments available), descend the mountain along the road to the Acherlealm (1867 m, no refreshments available) and finally along trail no. 53 back to St. Magdalena.
