From there, the trail climbs in several hairpin bends to the Tauernalm, followed by a relatively flat forest road to the Schütttalalm. From there, a rather steep trail leads down to Trinkstein.

Dogs:
Please always keep dogs on a leash (please note: Nature Park area). There are several streams along the route where dogs can drink. Dog-waste bag dispensers are located at the bridge near Holy Spirit and at the small parking area on the road towards Kasern.

Waste disposal:
Please do not leave any waste in nature. Take all your rubbish with you and dispose of it at your accommodation or with your household waste.

Cigarette butts must not be left in nature either. They pose a fire hazard and have a significant impact on the environment. Even a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 50 litres of water with harmful substances. Never throw cigarette butts into nature, on trails or near watercourses. Instead, use our free pocket ashtrays, available at the tourist offices.

Paper tissues should also not be left in nature, but disposed of with residual waste. They decompose very slowly and can remain in the environment for several years.

For thousands of years, the Krimmler Tauern Pass has been crossed by important Alpine routes. Shepherds, farmers, hunters, packhorse drivers, smugglers, soldiers and trail builders used these mountain passes to connect the Ahrntal Valley with the “Salzburg region”. Even today, the historic Tauern Trail bears witness to this fascinating past and brings the centuries-old route across the mountains to life.

A particularly important historical testimony is the picturesque pilgrimage chapel of Holy Spirit (Hl. Geist), located at the end of the valley in Kasern. In the past, it served as a place of rest and prayer for travellers and packhorse drivers before or after the demanding crossing of the pass.

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, the area captivates visitors with its unspoilt Alpine landscape. Along the trail, mountain forests, alpine meadows and high-altitude habitats alternate, creating a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. With a little luck, you may even spot some of the typical inhabitants of the Alpine world.

From Kasern (1,595 m) we go along the path of the cross to the pilgrim's church of Hl. Geist. From Trinkstein we take the historic "Tauernweg" cabin (2,018 m). The high altitude path provides superb views as we reach the "Schütttalalm" cabin from where we begin our descnet to the valley.
