Autumn

Now it's getting colourful

Crystal-clear skies, the best views and a colourful landscape – in autumn, nature in South Tyrol pulls out all the stops to impress. While the valley floor exudes the scent of harvest, the animals return home on the mountain farms.

Crystal-clear skies, the best views and a colourful landscape – in autumn, nature in South Tyrol pulls out all the stops to impress. While the valley floor exudes the scent of harvest, the animals return home on the mountain farms.

When the days get shorter, autumn arrives, even in sun-drenched South Tyrol. The forests throughout the region are transformed into a sea of colours. The fruit growers bring in the long-awaited apple harvest, while the wine growers press the delicious grapes and store the young wine in the cellar. Meanwhile, on the livestock farms, the grazing animals return from their summer stay on the Alpine pastures. During the traditional cattle drive, the magnificently decorated animals and their companions are greeted with festive music and local specialties. Back at the farm, the cows, sheep, goats and horses enjoy the last warm days on the surrounding meadows. The guests on the farm can observe the happy animals in the fresh air. Sometimes it's even possible to pet them over the wooden fence.

Tasty treats

Connoisseurs get their money's worth in the golden season in South Tyrol. In autumn, it's all about indulgence: the treasures that the garden and fields have produced are now being preserved for the winter. Colourfully labelled jam and compote jars, and crates of fruit and vegetables are piled up in the pantry, and wine and juice bottles are lined up in the cellar. In the farm shops and product corners, guests can stock up on homemade products and take the harvest festival home with them. By October at the latest, the beloved chestnuts will also be ripe. They are collected and carved by the farming family, and when darkness falls, they are roasted over an open fire. The guests of the holiday apartments and rooms soon gather around the flickering light. Nobody wants to miss out on this experience. The delicious chestnuts are freed from their charred skin and eaten together with a glass of fresh apple juice.

Amid the changing nature

In Autumn, with its mild temperatures and crystal-clear views, the best season for idyllic hikes and walks begins. It is not uncommon for the sky to shine bright blue at this time of year. The risk of thunderstorms is low and the sun often lures you on to secluded paths and picturesque mountain peaks well into November. With impressive lighting conditions, full enjoyment of the summit is guaranteed. The surrounding mountains seem within reach. Perfect conditions for a hiking holiday. All around the farm, a few cool nights are enough for nature and the trees are already slipping into their bright foliage. The golden larch meadows and yellow vineyards engage the farms in a harmonious play of colours. Autumn in South Tyrol is also inseparably linked to Törggelen. A popular tradition, where guests and locals let themselves be pampered with hearty farmhouse cooking, new wine and roasted chestnuts in the rustic parlour of the farmhouse tavern.
